This book started off with promise and then spent a whole lot of time going absolutely nowhere. I think the author may have ADHD, because she (and her main character) were bouncing all over the place. There were two (maybe three) completely independent story lines which at times you think are connected but turn out not to be. Our protagonist, Sloan Skye, is supposed to be some kind of super genius who gets assigned to a special branch of the FBI that believes that the supernatural is real and pursues cases that might involve such things. At first, the character is kind of charming and her relationships with her mother and her roommate show promise for being interesting, but it all falls apart. Firstly, after the "paranormal" aspect of the novel is hinted at, the reader is forced to endure about half of the book (at least) where the characters go through a mind-numbing investigation where they are trying to decide if it is paranormal or not, and the investigation itself is like reading a bunch of witness interviews. Meanwhile, something is going on with the roommate while Sloan seems completely oblivious or too busy to do anything or connect it to other goings-on even though a five-year old (much less a super genius) might start making connections. The romantic interest is pretty uninteresting and that whole relationship felt very arbitrary. The relationship with the mother when from interesting to irritating and you never really have a good idea of what is going on with the roommate (though the author attempts to explain part of it, albeit badly). The last twenty pages or so take an already disappointing story and push it off the edge of the cliff, having the two story lines completely disconnect from each other, dumping a whole lot of random information on the protagonist in an almost summary format and making almost no sense in the process. It winds up taking what might have been an interesting premise to a series and turning it into an rather banal and uninspiring story which killed any interest I might have had in giving the second book a shot.

Blood of Eden Sloan Skye Tami Dane 9780758267092 Books Reviews

I'm not really sure how I felt about this book. To me it felt like I was reading a paranormal spoof episode of Criminal Minds.

Sloan Skye is a genius FBI Intern, who lives with a genius chemist student roommate. Her mother is also extremely intelligent, and very quirky (the mother may, or may not have Schizophrenia. I'm banking that she doesn't). Her father was also extremely intelligent, but is no longer in the picture.

Skye seems to have only one other friend that may, or may not actually be her arch-enemy. He is actually her high school ex-boyfriend, and seems to be everywhere she is. Its borderline stalkerish. He is also extremely smart, and you are told by her that he may be smarter than her. Really does everyone in the book have to be a genius?????

What to me didn't really work was that she is supposed to be super intelligent, but I found that she seemed to not notice things that were right there if front of her. For a hopeful profiler that just didn't mesh to me. You can't be a dumb blonde and a super profiler at the same time. Take the ex he was supposed to have cheated on her in high school, yet for the last 5 years he has been her shadow (taken most of the classes she has, got a job at the FBI because she did, then transferred to the unit she worked with because she did, he got jealous of the other male agents, and helped her with her case) even though he's supposed to hate her. I found that odd from the beginning, and quickly realized he still liked her or never stopped. Though to Sloan it is an impossible suggestion even after all the help he gives her.

Skye is working with a new FBI group called the PBAU (paranormal behavioral Unit), which profiles cases that are of the occult. There are few agents in the group, and the ones that are there are suspicious. I was especially suspicious of super hot agent JT whom she is instantly attracted to. We have a setup for a love triangle between her, JT and Gabe the ex.

The action in this book is few and far between, mostly its mundane day to day stuff. You get a little quark thrown in from her mom, and roommate. The ending to me was very disappointing, but sets us up for another book.
I REALLY CANNOT REVIEW THIS BOOK BECAUSE I NEVER MADE IT PAST CHAPTER 4. IT READ PRETTY GOOD AT FIRST BUT IT JUST DIDN'T HOLD MY ATTENTION. IT READ LIKE A MYSTERY NOVEL AND I AM MORE MAGIC AND FEY AND SHIFTERS.
The idea and setup of this story is very interesting and promises many opportunities for character development and story archs. It is well written and thankfully not one of the amateurish ebooks around in the urban fantasy world that are rather thin and stereotypical. In my opinion it is money and time well spent and I am looking forward to the next in the series.
Since there is still some room for improvement, I give it 3 stars as a good and solid read.
What a fun ride! The main character, Sloan Skye is quirky - in fact, she's about as quirky, and delightful a protagonist as I've ever read! Click lit is far the better for the appearance of this new series. An amalgam between said "chick lit," paranormal/urban fantasy and police/law enforcement procedural, this tale moves gradually into the ether realms with tense plotting, quirky characters and a relentless drive towards an unexpected conclusion. Put off going for a ride on my Harley so I could finish this first of three tales! But I can start book two after a nice ride... Bottom line? If you are a fan of said genres, I think you'll enjoy the ride Tami Dane takes ya on in "Blood of Eden."
