This fourth book in the series is an extraordinary continuation of the story of the people from Witch Central. This book focuses on the Nova Scotia contingent, but most of the cast from earlier books come together at the end to support one grumpy man, and to save a beautiful lavender-eyed baby with a gift (or curse) for astral travel. The reader watches Marcus transform from a reclusive, saddened man into one who turns to family to help him save the tiny child he's come to love. I smiled 'til my face hurt, enjoying raspberries, bare feet, light-saber fights, and the fathers coming together to help Marcus deal with the mysteries of child care. There was a time I thought I would not stop crying. Debora Geary has an amazing gift for story-telling, a gift that takes us to a place with people we want to visit time after time. If you have never read her books, start with book one of the series. You will need familiarity with her characters to get the maximum enjoyment from this book. Get them all. You will be blessed by them. Thank you Mrs. Geary! I'm in awe!Tags : A Nomadic Witch (A Modern Witch Series: Book 4) - Kindle edition by Debora Geary. A Nomadic Witch A Modern Witch Series Book 4 edition by Debora Geary Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
I hadn't heard of this author or the witch book series until I took a chance and bought the first book. Now I just finished the fourth book, and I'm under the author's spell (so to speak). She writes beautifully, which sadly is no small compliment these days. Her characters are believable, going from high drama to high silliness, which is wonderful. I found myself laughing out loud more than once while reading The Nomadic Witch.
I know not every character can have a prominent role, but I was glad to see Daniel (Nell's non-witch husband) in this book. I'd also like to see Nathan (Nell's oldest and non-witch son) have more of a role - the 2 non-magical triplets have important skills, and it just seems their older brother keeps getting shuttled off to baseball camp or otherwise ignored. I suspect Nathan ought to have some serious coding skills, or at least some sort of 13-year old mischief, and he IS the only brother to young Aervan, "superboy"!
Yes, there are a lot of characters, but that's really part of the charm - it's a "village" spanning cities, countries and virtual worlds. And grumpy old Marcus (although at 48 I beg to differ on the description of him as old!!), well, he needed the kick in the pants that his lost brother Evan gave him in sending baby Morgan to him. Marcus had to find his own way out of his shell, but that didn't mean he and the witch community couldn't help. And help they did, with cookies, not-so-subtle pushes, cookies, new and old magic, cookies, and most importantly, loads of love, all aimed at Marcus.
Question Take a grumpy bachelor and a sweet little baby girl and what do you get? Answer A Nomadic Witch by Debora Geary.
Marcus Buchanan has been a recluse for a long time. He lost his brother over 40 years ago to the mists. Evan was a traveler, but know one knew much about them at the time. He so young and Marcus was devastated that he couldn't save him. In fact, not many people know about astral travelers, but the witching community is about to discover some really important finds. Evan, however, wants Marcus to stop hiding and star living. So, he's about to get a huge wake-up call!
Morgan was left on Marcus' doorstep and she's everything a baby is but unfortunately, she has a lot in common with his brother Evan. Marcus has spent the better part of his life not living. Now that Morgan has shown up, he has no idea what to do, either with her or himself. The witching community divides and conquers Marcus' heart and slowly he learns to open himself up again.
There were moments in the story where I found myself actually laughing. Seeing a grown, lonely and long since determine to be single guy take care of a cute little tiny baby. Classic, with a witchy twist! Set almost entirely in Nova Scotia and the Realm (you'll have to read the books to find out what that is!), Marcus adjusts to life with a baby, and along the way he learns that he must do everything he can to protect his girl-child with special gifts. As a babe she has no idea what she is doing, especially when she takes one of the other young witchlings along for the ride with her.
With the help of the town, the family and even Evan, Marcus races through the astral planes to save both little girls. When he returns, he realizes what he needs to do and that is to go find his brother and learn the truth about the astral world. Surely little Morgan, with the lavender eyes, is worth it.
Each story that Ms. Geary reveals only intensifies my love for these characters. The plots become more intricate and weave the characters tighter and tighter so that it becomes almost impossible to put the book down. The other night I actually had to tell my husband I had to go back and finish reading a previous story because I had to find out what happened to Grandma! Don't worry, nothing happens to her in this book, but you if you haven't read any of the Modern Witch Series books, you better start now!
This is Book 4 in the Modern Witch series.
The problem is that if you've got this far into the series you don't need a reviewer telling you how good the series is and if you've only just discovered them and are wondering whether you should give it a try then this isn't the book to start with. It's a good yarn but it's the fourth book in the series. Do yourself favour and start at the beginning
I just loved it. Deborah Geary thanks her Grumpy Old Man fan club at the start of the book and whilst I'm not a paid up member I suspect I definitely qualify and I really enjoyed the story.
Each book does stand on its own (I get really cross about books that don't, as you will see if you read some of my other reviews) but they are best read in order. Much more enjoyable that way.
So, a very good story, and it kept me reading right through to the end. As always, a lovely blend of traditional witchcraft and modern computing. Add in her usual wonderful family and a bit of astral travelling - what more could you want?
Cheers.
