Almost impossible to describe. A gentle post-apocalyptic fable with so much almost fairy tale (in the best sense) imagination and wisdom. I could easily teach this book in an English class. It has the theme of growing up, a journey from innocence to knowledge. Plenty of symbolism. If you can't see your own life reflected in this, you should read it again. My favorite book of all time – from a 65-year-old who reads a book a week. I re-read it every seven years.

Engine Summer SF Masterworks John Crowley 9780575082816 Books Reviews

This is one of my top ten books of all time - I read it every three years or so, and each time find new depth. Crowley sets up motif after motif, seemingly unrelated, then lays them all down like a winning hand in the last pages, stunningly. It's the kind of book you'll read again, just to see how he did it, and because the second time around, you know what the symbols, the motifs represent. From the opening line, he's telling you a story you don't know you are reading - leading the reader astray in much the same way the people of this time are led astray by what they don't know but conjecture about endlessly us, you and me, the people of this time. This book folds in on itself again and again, and one of its beauties is that what Crowley does to his character he's doing to the reader too, confusing us all with the snake hands ... if you like motif, alienation, the search for fulfillment, and identifying with a wise character who is nonetheless in way over his head, read this book.
In which industrial civilization collapsed some unspecified number of centuries ago in an even known as "the Storm," leaving a variety of different societies that seem to revolve around communion with nature (with the notable exception of the "avvengers" who scrounge about in modernity's leftovers) and non-violence and communalism. The parts of the story that focused on this were riveting. The question of how our descendents would look back at our lifestyle after some sort of epic catastrophe is one of the major draws of this kind of fiction, of course, and where this often takes the place in a kind of hyper-violent, hyper-individualistic milieu, Engine Summer draws the reader into a more pastoral, humane, even gentle setting, which is excellent, and goes hand-in-hand with Crowley's examinations of memory systems and story-telling and the self. I have the feeling, too, that this would only improve with a reread characters are always posing riddles to one another and relying on myth and folktales to explain things, and knowing what you do at the end of the novel would make puzzling your way through these even more enjoyable.

It's too bad, then, that this discussion has to share half of this short, short book with a terribly stupid love story.
Not sure what age range this is appropriate for, but I really enjoyed it in my mid twenties.
Crowley is a new writer for me and one who I will pursue for sure. I am definitely looking to read all of his books. The book itself is a wreck in that the spine is broken, but for the price I paid, I am very happy.
This is one of my favorites in this genre. I have read it many times and will do so again.
I sent this book to my nephew and he is enjoying it immensely. It is out of print so I was happy to find it for him on .
I love almost every thing John Crowley has written and this to me is one of the best. Its secrets are slowly revealed and just when you thing you have it figured out it suddenly twists around on you. It leaves much for the reader to discover, putting together clues and strange hints. And the ending is just the kind I like where you say "Didn't see that coming"
