I treasured this book from my first read. I made gifts of old copies to special friends and finally my copy vanished. I have 4 copies now and no I won't give you one, go buy one yourself. This book was not available for years, and then was reprinted. It is now an e-book on Amazon. Eric Frank Russell is a genius. He was in the war as intelligence and suggested much of this stuff to England but they told him no! The content of this book is unbelievable even in our modern society. If you don't keep your old books, send your old copy of this book to me. My contact info is in all of my books, on Amazon in e-book, Kindle format, enjoy.

First published in 1957, WASP is set in a far future sci-fi universe that finds Earth with an interstellar empire spanning dozens of planets locked in a war with an alien empire of roughly similar disposition. Fortunately, these aliens look enough like us that a human with the proper build can be cosmetically altered to look like one and pass all but the most invasive inspections. James Mowry is such a man. He's a "WASP". A special agent trained and equipped to conduct guerrilla operations behind enemy lines. He's dropped onto an alien held planet around page 20, and the rest of the book details, in very believable fashion, his execution of an insurgent playbook that over a period of several months will bring an entire planet to its knees.

The sci-fi setting is a bit of an oddity as little attempt is made to anticipate future technologies. Aside from the spaceships not much distinguishes the alien world from 1950's breadbasket America. In fact, some of the tactics employed wouldn't stand up to 2011 technology. Rather than detract from the read, I found it actually created a nostalgic charm adding to the enjoyment. The book isn't about exotic technologies or alien worlds, it's about how one man, properly equipped and motivated, can wreak an utterly disproportionate amount of havoc. It's a timeless lesson and perhaps more important today than when it was written.
WASP is an excellent science fiction tale about one James Mowrey, who enlists with Earth's WASP corps to fight the mighty Sirian Empire. In a future time of interstellar travel, Earth is at war with the belligerant Sirian Combine, which has twelve times the population and resources of Earth. The WASP corps' job is to help make up for this imbalance of forces by allowing one man, equipped with advanced training and equipment, to infiltrate an enemy planet and disrupt its society and war footing to a highly disproportionate degree. Basically one WASP will simulate an entire subversive underground, thereby diverting the Sirians from fighting Earth to fighting a phantom underground army.

The result is a story that is entertaining and gripping. The reader comes to identify with the protagonist WASP, James Mowrey, as he systematically disrupts the society on the Sirian planet of Jaimec, with the Sirian Secret Police hot on his trail.

The beauty of this novel is in the details. The story really does explain how such a thing might be done, and this is a fast-paced and interesting novel that keeps the reader's interest throughout. And it is plausible, or at least not implausible. The technology of this piece has become somewhat dated, but really this detracts not at all from the reader's enjoyment because this is not a novel about technology -- it is about psychology; how to psych-out the opposing side.

I first read this one in high school. Upon finding it on I could not resist reading it again, and I was pleased to see that it has lost none of its zip. This is an excellent novel. Recommended. RJB.
I read this book over forty years ago and it is a story that echoed again and again. The opening line, “we want you to be that wasp”, and the strategies that followed made me look unsuccessfully for the book over the years. On a whim I checked , and to my pleasant surprise, was able to bring back the memories fully.
Highly recommended to any avid sci-fi reader. You will not be disappointed.
Definitely of an era (1950s), but a fun, fast read. Follows the story of an agent provocateur sent to destabilize Earth's enemy. Highlights the fragility of societal trust. I found myself rooting for the protagonist, yet worried about the implications of similar activities in the modern context. Russell deftly shows how government response to small acts of terror/aggression can quickly overcompensate and fan the flames of instability -- the opposite of the desired outcome. Characters are believable, and recognizable. A good read.
This is one of those truly classic science fiction stories from the Golden Age and one that was heavily influenced by WWII. The author, Brit Eric Frank Russell uses black humor and an oddly prescient view of the use of terrorism to disrupt a country. The Terrans are at war with the Sirians, a totalitarian political regime, reminiscent of the fascist states of WWII. The Sirian "Kaitempi" secret police seem to be a thinly disguised version of the Japanese Kempeitai, censoring free speech, randomly harassing and torturing civilians and otherwise using threats and violence to intimidate the populace into submission. A single Terran agent, disguised as a Sirian, is dropped on a Sirian-controlled planet with the objective of conducting terrorist disruption prior to the invasion of a larger force. The book is highly entertaining and I'd recommend it for any age.
